OH MY GOD!!! Shades of Angels & Demons!!!
One of my science "arguments" used with my students when dealing with the really REALLY bad Hollywood Science thing is the inability to store antimatter in a container; especially that much. Well, it now seems science is getting closer to that Dan Brown scenario... A research group at CERN has just 'captured' 112 anti-atoms, anti-Hydrogen, for 1000 seconds! That's almost 17 MINUTES! This breaks the past record of containing, they use the term "capture", of 11 anti-atoms for one tenth of a second! WOWZERS! This was, according to the lead guy, long enough for the positrons (anti-electrons) to reach ground state and for the researchers to start probing and measuring properties. Quite cool!

It's just a matter of time that some fanatic will still a few grams of this stuff by cutting out a scientists eyeballs and then threaten the Vatican... Well, maybe not...

It is to weep...

More ignorance, fear, and placating in the world's media outlets...
I'm sure by now you've all heard the news that the WHO, World Health Org, an arm of the United Nations, issued a report yesterday (05/31/11) that, according to the news outlets, links cell phone use to brain cancers. Well, that's all the media needed to go into it's typical feeding frenzy of misinformation and sensationalism. Let's get the facts straight:
  1. WHO did NOT, allow me to repeat that, DID NOT link cell phone use to brain cancers. This is NOT a new scientific study with any new data, correlations, or effect. All they did, these 31 "scientists", was to issue an over-reaction to the possibility that cell phone radiation could be a carcinogen. In their own words, "possibly carcinogenic." They reviewed many of the already published scientific peer-reviewed papers on the subject and, get this, "since most of the data is inconclusive, we are warning of the possibility of..." SAY WHAT??? OK, try this one on for size: I have inconclusive scientific data that my Bernese Mountain dog is an alien from an advanced civilization sent here to learn our ways. So, I'll be having a press release later today about this "possibility". Cut me a break.
  2. The scientific evidence is overwhelmingly negative. We know so much about the effects of EM radiations. The weak radio frequencies used for cell phone communications have never been shown to cause any adverse cellular effects. NEVER. According to Rob Parks, U of MD Physicist, "All cancers are caused by mutant strands of DNA. Electromagnetic radiation can’t create mutant strands of DNA unless the frequency is at or higher than the blue limit of the visible spectrum the near-ultraviolet. The frequency of cell phone radiation is about 1 million times too low." { ...}
  3. The group these geniuses placed cell phone use into, 2B, includes lead, car exhaust, cobalt, nickel (GET THOSE COINS OUT OF YOUR POCKET! Send them to me for proper disposal!), coffee, diesel fuel, gasoline, pickled vegetables (Yes, PICKLED Frikkin' Vegetables fer cryin' out loud!), and the fuel oil in my basement! Wow, I'm surrounded! The only thing I don't have to worry about is the vegetables; never touch them... Quote from IARC: Group 2B; "This category is used for agents for which there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals." If I read this correctly, "limited evidence" and "less than sufficient evidence" don't sound very convincing...

It is to weep...

UPDATE for above post!!!
I stole this blog comment from the famous (and close personal friend of mine...) Phil Plait's BadAstronomy website. Read it!

20. Scott Hurst Says: June 1st, 2011 at 8:21 am The problem is that we do have relevant data for a much greater than a couple decade span. We've been exposing people (like me) who work in communications and RADAR fields with exactly the same frequencies but at enormously higher power for the better part of a century. If there was really something to worry about here, we'd long ago had stories like Marie Curie's and the "Radium Girls" Nothing like hanging out in a room with fluorescentcent lights shining and all the switches turned off, you know you're getting some serious RF exposure then. Radiation in the 1-10 Ghz range hold few surprises any more. Not only does our theoretically understanding of light offer no possible way for such puny photons to cause cancer, we have spectacular evidence of no harm after "high dose" exposure to the same from at least the 1940s.

More ignorance, fear, and placating in the great USA's educational system...
Smith-Cotton High School band in Sedalia, Missouri, made these clever shirts! I love it! Brass Evolutions. Get it?

A few fundamentalist parents complained about the shirt because it depicted **GASP** the evil evolution thing! "I made the decision to have the band members turn the shirts in after several concerned parents brought the shirts to my attention", Asst Superintendent Brad Pollitt said. According to the Sedalia paper (linked below): "Band parent Sherry Melby, who is a teacher in the district, stands behind Pollitt’s decision. Melby said she associated the image on the T-shirt with Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution." Wait. WHAT? A cartoon depiction of man's progression from primitive primate is related to evolution? Nah...

This is the kicker: "I was disappointed with the image on the shirt", Melby said. "I don't think evolution should be associated with our school."

There was a voice of reason, even though it did no good: "Parent Alena Hoeffling said she is infuriated with administration’s decision to pull the attire. 'Whatever happened to the separation of church and state,' she said. Hoeffling said she is both a scientific person and a practicing Catholic and enjoyed the 'play on words.' 'I thought it was funny,' she said. 'I didn’t think much of it.'

When will this lunacy stop? Evolution is the frikkin' CORNERSTONE of all modern biology! Period! It's as close to a 'fact' as the rules of science allow! For cryin' out load, there's more scientific debate over the "Theory" of Gravity than over Evolution! And for a teacher, A TEACHER, to claim that her school shouldn't be associated with evolution? What in the name of Sam Hill are those kids learning? Oh, I forgot... Missouri is only 6000 years old...

It is to weep...

And you thought String Theory was weird???
From comes news of a group of fizzicists who have explained a previously unexplained physical phenomenon using the bizarre math of String Theory! "...the first time used string theory to describe a physical phenomenon. Their discovery has been reported in Science Express." Further, this is the very first time an article about String Theory has been published in the prestigious magazine Science. Electrons can apparently form a weird state called the quantum critical state that allows for high-temperature superconductivity. This is sort of a bridge between the incredibly small quantum properties of electrons and electron properties in our macro-world; they seem to be the same at this 'critical state'. High-temp superconductivity is defined as acheiving virtually no electrical resistance at temperatures above 77K, the boiling point of liquid N. Explanations of why electrons did this eluded fizzicists till now. The strange 11-dimensional math of String Theory seems to explain it just nicely, thank you.; July 03, 2009
The world has finally gone down the crapper!
"An Inconvenient Truth" is being transformed into an opera! Yes, you read right. I didn't stutter. AN OPERA!! According to Pittsburg Post, "The Associated Press is reports that La Scala has commissioned composer Giorgio Battistelli for an opera based on Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' for its 2011 season." OMG! I can see it now... Viking warrior 'Gore The Red' singing in Jibberish or some other dead language while slaying the heretics, blasphemers, and deniers with his Sword of AGW that only he can wield! I'd be more than happy to play the role of 'Daryl The Denier' and fight 'Gore The Red' to the death using truth instead of vitriol! Think they'll accept my application? sigh...

North & South Hemispheres don't jive on climate??
From "A steady drop in water levels in Lake Michigan/Huron over the first half of this decade resulted from natural causes, not man-made ones, according to U.S. and Canadian researchers, noting that the past 18 months of rising waters could be an indication the lakes are headed back to normal levels." Well, isn't this special! Further, "Chester Kolascz [one of the researchers] said he remembers the ice jams created on the St. Clair River in 1984 and isn't surprised it may have played a role. But after 32 years in the area, he has seen the water levels rise and fall and doesn't allow his concerns to move with them."

Glaciers ADVANCING? Tell me it AIN'T so!!
From "Perched on the soaring Karakoram mountains in the Western Himalayas, a group of some 230 glaciers are bucking the global warming trend. They're growing." Hmm... let me see... The Goracle and his army of Alarmists have been preaching the ultimate doom of the world because of receeding glaciers EVERYWHERE. Well, the facts are
  1. Glaciers advance and recede. That's what they do. It's sorta like they breath.
  2. We are, after all, coming off an ice-age, including the Little Ice Age.
  3. There are as many glaciers in the world advancing as are receeding. Period.
  4. Glaciers 'calve'. They break apart in pieces as they advance. They certainly can't break apart and fall into the deep waters if they are running away from the water... duh...

Wow! 650 peominent scientists dispute AGW, the IPCC, and the Goracle Himself...
"Over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 231-page U.S. Senate Minority Report -- updated from 2007’s groundbreaking report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming “consensus” -- features the skeptical voices of over 650 prominent international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. This updated report includes an additional 250 (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the initial release in December 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. "

So, let's see... 650 real geologists, climatologists, physicists, and other derelicts are refuting the Goracle? KEWL!

A few quotes from the scientists? Sure, why not?
“Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly….As a scientist I remain skeptical.” - Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology and formerly of NASA who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called “among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.”
“The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn’t listen to others. It doesn’t have open minds… I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists,” - Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet.
“It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into anthropogenic global warming.” - U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.
“After reading [UN IPCC chairman] Pachauri's asinine comment [comparing skeptics to] Flat Earthers, it's hard to remain quiet.” - Climate statistician Dr. William M. Briggs, who specializes in the statistics of forecast evaluation, serves on the American Meteorological Society's Probability and Statistics Committee and is an Associate Editor of Monthly Weather Review.
“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming? For how many years must cooling go on?" - Geologist Dr. David Gee the chairman of the science committee of the 2008 International Geological Congress who has authored 130 plus peer reviewed papers, and is currently at Uppsala University in Sweden.
“CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or another….Every scientist knows this, but it doesn’t pay to say so…Global warming, as a political vehicle, keeps Europeans in the driver’s seat and developing nations walking barefoot.” - Dr. Takeda Kunihiko, vice-chancellor of the Institute of Science and Technology Research at Chubu University in Japan.
“Many [scientists] are now searching for a way to back out quietly (from promoting warming fears), without having their professional careers ruined.” - Atmospheric physicist James A. Peden, formerly of the Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh. Thanks, Ryan!

I know!! It's been a while AGAIN!!! But, I'm back!
Via Phil Plait's Bad Astronomer Blog, check out for their list of 7 Stupid People Who Sued the Scientific Method. A great read. Includes the guy who sued to shut down CERN's LHC because, " will create a black hole and destroy the earth...". Or the lady astrology (Yes, ASTOLOGER...) from Russia who sued NASA for $300 Million because they ruined her horoscope by hitting the comet 9P/Tempel with a huge copper bullet to see what was inside. Sigh...; Dec 26, 2008
I know!! It's been a while... However, this is worth the wait!
Quoting my hero, Dr Phil Plait, well, one of my heros, "Is this the very first image of a planet orbiting a star like the Sun?" WOWZERS!! This COULD be the 1st real image, albeit IR, of an extrasolar planet! I got the Stream 30 minutes after Dr Phil posted this! We could be seeing the very first picture of a planet orbiting a star 'sorta' like our own. According to Phil, "The star is 1RSX J160929.1-210524 (for those taking notes at home) — it’s a K7 dwarf, a bit cooler and smaller than the Sun — and the planet is the blip circled at the upper left. It has no real name as yet — it hasn’t been confirmed yet; more on that in a sec — but if it’s a planet orbiting the star, it has a mass of about 8 times that of Jupiter." So, this means what? Can you say, "ET Phone Home"?

Atmospheric Gravity Waves Make Tornados
According to Coleman, wave-storm interactions are very important. If a gravity wave hits a rotating thunderstorm, it can sometimes spin that storm up into a tornado. What is an atmospheric gravity wave? Coleman explains: "They are similar to waves on the surface of the ocean, but they roll through the air instead of the water. Gravity is what keeps them going. If you push water up and then it plops back down, it creates waves. It's the same with air."
NOTE: These are NOT to be confused with gravity waves that consist of gravitons interacting with matter...

China is under the largest snow storm in 50 years! FIFTY years! It's being blamed on Global Warming... sigh... " Chinese workers and army soldiers were racing to sweep snow-covered highways and unclog railway routes for millions of travelers trapped by cold weather. Souzhou, China, is blanketed by the most snow the city has had in 25 years, according to I-Reporter Susan Arthur. More than 67 million people have been affected by the weather and economic losses are expected to reach as much as $3 billion, Chinese officials say. Blizzards have snapped power lines and destroyed houses and farmland, prompting fears of food and energy shortages. Twenty-four people have died and some 827,000 people have been evacuated in 14 different provinces, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday."

NOAA publishes yet another paper that contradicts the IPCC on hurricanes!
As NOAA has been studying and stating since the 90's, warmer waters will NOT increase the numbers of or the severity of hurricanes. In fact, again, ths new tudy finds the opposite: warmer water causes less number adlower energy hurricanes! Duh! According to a paper published Wednesday in Geophysical Research Letters, "One group of climate scientists has linked increases in the strongest hurricanes -- just those with winds greater than 130 mph -- in the past 35 years to global warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said "more likely than not," manmade global warming has already increased the frequency of the most intense storms. But hurricane researchers, especially scientists at NOAA's Miami Lab, have argued that the long-term data for all hurricanes show no such trend. And Wang's new research suggests just the opposite of the view that more intense hurricanes result from global warming. The Miami faction points to a statement by an international workshop on tropical cyclones that says "no firm conclusion can be made on this point."

An example of evolution that only took 150 years! Unfortunately...
"Zoologists from Oxford University suggest that ivory poachers, who go for the largest males with the largest tusks, have caused the breeding behaviors of the animals to change rapidly in a short time."
Seems that since poachers have and are killing the elephants with large tusks, the big ones aren't passing on their genetic info for other elephants to have big tusks. The ones that are breeding/surviving are the ones with smaller tusks. Quite an example of 'microevolution' or, as I like to call this, 'un-natural selection'.
A "Digg" online discussion of this with a few interesting comments is, unfortunatly titled, "Proof of Evolution"... sigh...

So, you think it's only our kids who don't know science? Think again, Einstein!
“Science and Engineering Indicators 2008” has just been released. This is a biannual report by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Science Resources Statistics under the National Science Board that reveals the state of science education, research and development trends, health of the science and technology industry, and the understanding of science among children and adults in the United States. The chapter on public attitudes and understandings about science and health always offers interesting surprises about what people think.
A few interesting findings...
  • We don't even follow science, let alone understand it... The percentage of adults who said they closely followed science and technology news has been declining for the past decade, according to the report, down to 15% in 2006. Among the news closely followed by the public, science ranked after news of the weather (50%), crime, community, health, sports, government, Washington news, international affairs and religion.
  • Check validity of reports? What? Me Worry? Only about half said they had “ever” compared the information they found on the internet with sources like a science journal or encyclopedia, or had ever looked up the original source of information or the original study.
  • Thirty percent of adults thought all radioactivity was man-made. Oh, My...
  • 57% couldn’t correctly answer the question about evolution. Additionally, 3/4 said evolution is only a recent 'theory' and more time is needed to study it! WOWZERS!
  • More than half of adults (55%) believed that lasers work by focusing sound waves.
  • More than two-thirds didn't know about the big bang.
  • Less than two-thirds knew that it's the father's gene that decides the gender of a baby.
  • One in three American adults believed the sun revolves around the Earth! Can you say, Aristotilean viewpoint?
  • And 45% didn’t know how long it takes for the Earth to go around the sun or that antibiotics don’t kill viruses.
  • Three out of four Americans could not correctly answer basic questions about words and terms they heard in news stories about the results of research, although they claim to believe the stories the words were in.
  • 73% of adults were more likely to think something is scientific if it was consistent with what they think is common sense — which, the report notes, is “a belief system that is not a part of science.”
  • How many Americans believe that astrology is (very or sort of) scientific? 31%! Another 4% weren’t sure.
  • 55% also say they think we depend too much on science and not enough on faith.
  • More than half (54%) of Americans have heard "nothing at all" about nanotechnology.
Well, it's no wonder the AGW alarmists are so prevalent.

UNBELIEVABLE!! Duke Univ research shows the North Atlantic warming was caused by natural variability! However, reporters are claiming, "...but global warming may be in play somewhere else..."
A Duke University-led analysis of available records shows that while the North Atlantic Ocean's surface waters warmed in the 50 years between 1950 and 2000, the change was not uniform. In fact, the subpolar regions cooled at the same time that subtropical and tropical waters warmed.
This striking pattern can be explained largely by the influence of a natural and cyclical wind circulation pattern called the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), wrote authors of a study published Thursday, Jan. 3, in Science Express, the online edition of the journal Science.
Other studies cited in the Science Express report suggest human-caused global warming may be affecting recent ocean heating trends. But Lozier and her coauthors found their data can't support that view for the North Atlantic. "It is premature to conclusively attribute these regional patterns of heat gain to greenhouse warming," they wrote.
"The take-home message is that the NAO produces strong natural variability," said Lozier in an interview. "The simplistic view of global warming is that everything forward in time will warm uniformly. But this very strong natural variability is superimposed on human-caused warming. So researchers will need to unravel that natural variability to get at the part humans are responsible for."

Brookhaven Labs report
"Anthropogenic (man-made) global warming bites the dust," declared astronomer Dr. Ian Wilson after reviewing the new study which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research. Another scientist said the peer-reviewed study overturned "in one fell swoop" the climate fears promoted by the UN and former Vice President Al Gore. The study entitled "Heat Capacity, Time Constant, and Sensitivity of Earth's Climate System," was authored by Brookhaven National Lab scientist Stephen Schwartz.
"Effectively, this (new study) means that the global economy will spend trillions of dollars trying to avoid a warming of ~ 1.0 K by 2100 A.D." Dr. Wilson wrote in a note to the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee on August 19, 2007. Wilson, a former operations astronomer at the Hubble Space Telescope Institute in Baltimore MD, was referring to the trillions of dollars that would be spent under such international global warming treaties like the Kyoto Protocol.
"Previously, I have indicated that the widely accepted values for temperature increase associated with a doubling of CO2 were far too high i.e. 2 – 4.5 Kelvin. This new peer-reviewed paper claims a value of 1.1 +/- 0.5 K increase for a doubling of CO2,"

Brookhaven Nat'l Labs - 09/17/07
Finally! US Senate released report of 400 promient scientists who dispute anthropogenic global warming!
According to the Senate report, "Over 400 prominent scientists from more than two dozen countries recently voiced significant objections to major aspects of the so-called 'consensus' on man-made global warming. These scientists, many of whom are current and former participants in the UN IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), criticized the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore."
This is a significant difference when considering that, "The over 400 skeptical scientists featured in this new report outnumber by nearly eight times the number of scientists [52] who participated in the 2007 UN IPCC Summary for Policymakers. The notion of "hundreds" or "thousands" of UN scientists agreeing to a scientific statement does not hold up to scrutiny. Recent research by Australian climate data analyst Dr. John McLean revealed that the IPCC's peer-review process for the Summary for Policymakers leaves much to be desired."

WOWZERS! Coal ash is more radioactive than nuclear waste!!
According to a Scieantific American report, the burning of coal concentrates the radioactive trace elements in the waste callled 'ash'. Quoting from the article, "Over the past few decades, however, a series of studies has called these stereotypes into question. Among the surprising conclusions: the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, fly ash—a by-product from burning coal for power—contains up to 100 times more radiation than nuclear waste." This includes Uranium and Thorium! Go figure!

Global Warming is Universal?
How can the UN Secretary General expect us to buy into his TRILLION dollar plans to stop climate change when it is happening all over the solar system? Are we causing that, too, or are Martians driving SUVs to work? Here's just a short list of science reports ignored by the media that indicate that the earth is just one of the 'victims' and that we humans can't be responsible...
  1. Pluto warms drastically! reports that the, "average surface temperature increased about 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit, or slightly less than 2 degrees Celsius." This, even while Pluto is getting farther from the sun! Go figure!
  2. Jupiter in midst of global climate change! Another report of climate change on Jupiter! "The latest images could provide evidence that Jupiter is in the midst of a global change that can modify temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit on different parts of the globe." This, after a bunch of new spots joined to form a new giant spot called "Red Jr."
  3. Science-A-Go-Go report Even Neptune's giant moon, Titan, is feeling global warming pains! "The Earth is not alone in suffering global warming. According to observations made by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and several ground-based instruments, temperatures on Neptune's largest moon have increased dramatically since the Voyager space probe swung by in 1989. So much so, in fact, that Triton's surface of frozen nitrogen is turning into gas, making its thin atmosphere denser by the day."
  4. Monster storm on Saturn blamed on climate change there! "Images taken by Cassini indicate clockwise winds blowing at 350 miles per hour and a ring of towering clouds surrounding the pole. The ring clouds, 20 miles to 45 miles above those in the center of the storm, are two to five times taller than thunderstorm and hurricane clouds that form on Earth."

Yet, ANOTHER peer-reviewed scientific paper refuting anthropogenic GW...
Climate warming is natural, not human caused, says new study
International Journal of Climatology of the Royal Meteorological Society [DOI: 10.1002/joc.1651] (December 2007)
Climate scientists at the University of Rochester, the University of Alabama, and the University of Virginia report that observed patterns of temperature changes ('fingerprints') over the last thirty years are not in accord with what greenhouse models predict and can better be explained by natural factors, such as solar variability. Therefore, climate change is 'unstoppable' and cannot be affected or modified by controlling the emission of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, as is proposed in current legislation.
These results are in conflict with the conclusions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and also with some recent research publications based on essentially the same data. However, they are supported by the results of the US-sponsored Climate Change Science Program (CCSP).
The report is published in the December 2007 issue of the International Journal of Climatology of the Royal Meteorological Society [DOI: 10.1002/joc.1651]. The authors are Prof. David H. Douglass (Univ. of Rochester), Prof. John R. Christy (Univ. of Alabama), Benjamin D. Pearson (graduate student), and Prof. S. Fred Singer (Univ. of Virginia).
The fundamental question is whether the observed warming is natural or anthropogenic (human-caused). Lead author David Douglass said: "The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends, does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming. The inescapable conclusion is that the human contribution is not significant and that observed increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases make only a negligible contribution to climate warming."
Co-author John Christy said: "Satellite data and independent balloon data agree that atmospheric warming trends do not exceed those of the surface. Greenhouse models, on the other hand, demand that atmospheric trend values be 2-3 times greater. We have good reason, therefore, to believe that current climate models greatly overestimate the effects of greenhouse gases. Satellite observations suggest that GH models ignore negative feedbacks, produced by clouds and by water vapor, that diminish the warming effects of carbon dioxide."

Not only will the crescent moon, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and an exploding comet be giving a once in a lifetime spectacle, but the shuttle Discovery and the ISS will be visible early morning as the un-dock. You'll be able to see them both as little specks 'floating' overhead as they separate from each other. A quote from NASA News:

"Comet 17P/Holmes burst into view last week when something happened to the comet's core—a collapse, a fracture, a comet-quake? No one knows!—causing the comet to surge in brightness almost a million-fold. It is now visible to the unaided eye as an expanding fuzzball in the constellation Perseus similar in brightness to the stars of the Big Dipper. To find the comet, first face Mars and then spin around 180-degrees: sky map. It's a must-see target for backyard telescopes."

A physicist has a few nasty words to say about the 'popular' views of CO2 greenhousing...
Excerps here:

The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that authors trace back to the traditional works of Fourier 1824, Tyndall 1861 and Arrhenius 1896 and is still supported in global climatology essentially describes a fictitious mechanism in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. (Emphasis added.)

Nevertheless, in almost all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature it is taken for granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm scientific foundation. In this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the underlying physical principles are clarified. By showing that (a) there are no common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently mentioned difference of 33 C is a meaningless number calculated wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is falsified."

New study shows "Human Activity Changes Global Rains"
Unfortunately, this study has no empirical data linking rainfall and GW, too many anecdotes, has several studies contadicting their findings:
  1. American Meteorilogical Society's Monthly Weather Review article.
  2. Climate change - there is no need for concern, Science in Africa article by Prof. WJR Alexander.
  3. Climate and desertification in Southern Africa, GeoJournal; Volume 2, Supplement 2 / March, 1981

How NOT to measure surface temperature!
Seems the NOAA / NWS has some problems with basic science when it comes to 'control' issues at their surface temperature sites!
Be sure to link backwards to "Part 20"; a God-Awful example of where these surface temperatures are coming from. No wonder some data sets claim a temp rise...

Worst one I've found is at the Press Democrat newspaper building in Santa Rosa, CA. (from same website). Here's a picture:

But, don't worry! There's absolutely no 'heat island' effect caused by that acre of roofing and the 5 industrial-strength AC units surrounding the sensor. Nah...
